 Dr.Kaustabh Kumar Maiti

Kaustabh Kumar Maiti obtained B.Sc Chemistry (Honours) & M.Sc. in organic chemistry (specialization) from University of Calcutta (India) and thereafter awarded Ph.D from the same university in the year 2001. His Ph.D work based on development of synthetic methodologies of regio- and stereo-selective nitrogenous heterocycles by 1,3-dipolar nitrone cycloaddition with a wide variety of synthetic and naturally occurring diplorophiles. He started his professional carrier in leading pharmaceutical R&D’s in India, 2000-2003 (Alembic Ltd. and Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd.) where he worked in process development of generic drugs and drug discovery program. After industrial training, he joined postdoctoral research at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH, 2003-2007), South Korea, with Prof. Sung-Kee Chung and developed a series of novel non-peptide drug delivery system (DDS) using inositol and carbohydrate as scaffold. He moved to Complex Cabohydrate Research Center (CCRC), The University of Georgia, USA to continue second postdoctoral research. In CCRC he worked Prof. Geert-Jan Boons’s group (2007  -2009) in the field of glycopeptide, structural aspects of peptidoglycan and LPS. Before joining at CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, he engaged at Singapore Bioimaging Consortium (under Biomedical Sciences Institute, A*STAR) as a research scientist (2009-2012) and explored surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform and SERS-nanoparticle tags as diagnostic tool for detection and imaging of cancer biomarkers. His current research interest focused on synthesis and biological evaluation of synthetic (peptide, non-peptide, dendron based scaffold ) and nano-carrier based drug-delivery system (DDS) for targeted delivery of small molecular drugs, proteins, nucleic acids and plasmid DNA.  Also his interest on the development of multimodal theranostic nanoprobe for infectious diseases as well as cancer detection and imaging by SERS, fluorescence, MRI, photoacoustic as diagnostic modalities and PDT, PTT and combined chemo-immuno therapy. Presently his group initiated on natural product derived new phyto chemical entities (NPCEs) towards Hit / advanced Hit generation in cancer therapy.

Research Interest

Research interests in my laboratory consisted at the interface between chemistry, biology and nano science. Our focus on development of Targeted Drug-Delivery System (TDDS) based on synthetic or nanocarrier for target specific delivery of small molecular drugs, proteins, nucleic acids, genes. Secondly, our interest on nano-bio-science area to develop functionalized nano-particle probes which acts as a highly sensitive diagnostic tool on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform for non-invasive detection of various human cancer and other diseases viz., Alzheimer. We are aiming to construct different functionalized theranostic nanoparticle probes with SERS and fluorescence based diagnosis simultaneous with PDT and PTT as therapy. We are also interested in designing, synthesizing and studying biologically active molecules, which include small molecules and natural products, peptides, glycol-peptides, antigenic-oligosaccharides and find out their role, mode of recognition in biological system. Our long term research goals are to develop unique drug-delivery system as a potential carrier of non bioavailable drugs, novel diagnostic probes for cancer screening and to processes for their commercialization.

Current research interest:

  • Targeted Drug Delivery System Development (TDDS) : Both synthetic and nano-carrier scaffold for localized therapy, sustained / controlled release.
    • Multimodal Cancer therapy : Chemo-photo ; Chemo-immuno;
    • Combined therapy on diabetic retinopathy by ocular / intravitreal pathway
  • Diagnostic Nanoparticle probes : SERS-tags for Label-free / SERS-labelled / SERS -kit.
