Dr. Jubi John received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (Christian College, Chengannur) in 2002 and Master’s degree (St. Berchmans College, Changanacherry) in 2004. He completed his Ph. D. in Chemistry from University of Kerala in March 2010 based on the work done in the area of ‘Palladium catalyzed transformation of azabicyclic olefins’ under the guidance of Dr. K. V. Radhakrishnan at CSIR–NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram. Soon after he was awarded the CEA-Eurotalents Fellowship and moved to Centre for Atomic Energy (CEA-Saclay) in France and worked in the group of Dr. Eric Doris (May 2010 – May 2011). Later he was awarded the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt fellowship to work (August 2011 – January 2013) in the group of Prof. Henning Hopf at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, TU Braunschweig, Germany. In February 2013, he moved to Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and worked with Prof. Wim Dehaen and Prof. Jan Balzarini and stayed there until February 2015. In 2014, Dr. John was awarded the DST-Young scientist start up grant and in July 2015, he joined CSIR-NIIST and continued in the position for seven months. In March 2016, he joined as a Scientist fellow (Quick hire scheme) and remained in the position until March 2019. Dr. John was appointed as a senior scientist in December 2019 at the Chemical Sciences and Technology Division of CSIR–NIIST. In 2017 and early 2019, he was awarded experienced researcher visits to Germany by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation. His current research interests include development of novel antiviral drug candidates, novel fused heterocyclic motifs, organo-and transition metal catalyzed reactions, heterogeneous catalysis and development of dyes for DSC applications.
- December 2019 to date: Senior Scientist at Organic Chemistry Section, CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, India.
The responsibilities at CSIR-NIIST include scientific research, mentoring of Doctoral and Masters’ students and teaching of AcSIR courses. - March 2019 – May 2019: Experienced researchervisit to Institute for Organic Chemistry, Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, sponsored by Alexander von Humboldtfoundation.
The research at TU Braunschweig was focused on the development of synthetic routes towards privileged heterocyclic scaffolds. - March 2016 – to February 2019: Scientist Fellow(QHS) and Assistant Professor of AcSIR at Organic Chemistry Section, CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, India.
The responsibilities at CSIR-NIIST include scientific research, mentoring of Doctoral and Masters’ students and teaching of AcSIR courses. - October 2017 – November 2017: Experienced researchervisit to Institute for Organic Chemistry, Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, sponsored by Alexander von Humboldtfoundation.
The research at TU Braunschweig was focused on the development of synthetic routes towards privileged heterocyclic scaffolds. - July 2015 – February 2016: DST-Young Scientistat Organic Chemistry Section, CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, India.
The research at CSIR-NIIST was focused on the development of tandem transformations towards fused heterocycles. - February 2013 – February 2015: Postdoctoral Fellowat University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. Research supervisors Prof. Dr. Jan Balzarini (Virologist) and Prof. Dr. Wim Dehaen (Organic Chemist).
The research at KU Leuven mainly focused on the synthesis and biological testing (for its anti-viral properties) of novel phosphonucleosides. The initial results in this line were promising and found that the lead compound showed good activity against herpetic DNA polymerases. In addition, several other synthetic organic chemistry projects for the synthesis of functionalized heterocycles were undertaken. - June 2011 - January 2013: Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at Institute for Organic Chemistry, Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, in the group of Prof. Dr. Henning Hopf.
The studies at Technical University of Braunschweig were mainly centered on the development of catalytic tandem reactions towards the synthesis of different heterocycles and carbocycles. Our investigations resulted in introducing a palladium catalyzed domino reaction towards substituted furanones. - May 2010 - May 2011: CEA-Eurotalents Fellowat Centre for Atomic energy (CEA), Saclay, France, in the group of Dr. Eric Doris.
The time spend at CEA under the guidance of Dr. Doris gave me the opportunity to get trained in the field of carbon nanotube-metal nanoparticle hybrid catalysis. The fabrication of the hybrid involved layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of gold nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes. We could develop the first nanotube-based hybrid system for the oxidation of silanes. - September 2005 - March 2010: Research Fellowat CSIR-NIIST, in the group of Dr. K. V. Radhakrishnan.
Specialization in Synthetic Organic Chemistry: The topic doctoral thesis deals with palladium catalyzed transformations of azabicyclic olefins towards different substituted cyclopentenes.

Dr. John’s research is mainly focused on the synthesis of organic motifs for medicinal and material applications. The group is currently focusing on the development of anti-viral drug candidates targeting both DNA and RNA viruses. In addition, exploration of novel homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyzed organic reactions and devising new reactions towards fused heterocycles are being pursued.
